Great Barrier Reef! Is it nearly the weekend already?!

So, like a brightly blue coloured Surgeonfish, we’ll scurry our way around in our ever growing school of friends, navigating the maze of tropical coral that’s teaming with life and colour on the hunt for food and shelter away from the bigger and more menacing movie monsters of the sea. We’ll scratch around and uncover some retro movie classics, always looking for our next fix of celluloid wonder.

Have a happy retro weekend!

SATURDAY 30th AUGUST

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) 5* 4:05pm-5:50pm (1 hour 45 minutes)
The eccentric pet detective is coaxed out of self-imposed exile in a Buddhist monastery to visit Africa and help search for a sacred white bat. However, his unique investigative talents are tested to the limits as he faces a race against time to find the missing creature and prevent a tribal war. Comedy sequel, starring Jim Carrey, Simon Callow and Bob Gunton.

Jurassic Park III (2001) ITV2 7:35pm-9:25pm (1 hour 50 minutes)
Palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant is lured to a dinosaur-infested island by a divorced couple who offer to fund his research, unaware their real motive is to find their missing son – and that the creatures on the island are far more intelligent than anyone suspected. Action adventure sequel, starring Sam Neill, William H Macy, Tea Leoni and Alessandro Nivola.

Jurassic Park T-Shirts

Airplane! (1980) Film4 7:15pm-9:00pm (1 hour 45 minutes)
The passengers on board an ill-fated airliner become increasingly jittery when the flight crew flounder during a food-poisoning crisis. As ground control personnel struggle heroically to ensure the plane lands safely, a traumatised war veteran must face his fear to take the controls. Spoof disaster movie, starring Robert Hays, Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack and Lloyd Bridges.

Fun Fact! For the argument between announcers concerning the white and red zones at the airport, the producers hired the same voice artists who had made the real-world announcements at Los Angeles International Airport. At the real airport, the white zone is for loading and unloading of passengers only, and there’s no stopping in the red zone (except for transit buses). They were also married to each other in real life.

Parenthood (1989) ITV London 10:45pm-1:00am (2 hours 15 minutes)
Anxious family man Gil Buckman is determined to have a better relationship with his three children than he had with his tough father. Elsewhere, his two sisters are also having family problems – one is struggling to understand her two troubled teenagers, while the other’s husband wants to turn their toddler into a child genius. Comedy drama, starring Steve Martin, Keanu Reeves, Mary Steenburgen, Jason Robards and Dianne Wiest.

SUNDAY 31st AUGUST

The Borrowers (1997) ITV London 1:30pm-3:10pm (1 hour 40 minutes)
A family of four-inch-high people living beneath the floorboards of an ordinary human home help the owner’s son fight back when a dastardly lawyer plans to demolish the house and make way for a luxury apartment block. Children’s fantasy, starring John Goodman, Jim Broadbent, Celia Imrie, Flora Newbigin and Tom Felton.

Police Academy 3: Back in Training (1986) ITV4 4:15pm-6:00pm (1 hour 45 minutes)
Facing closure from cutbacks in public spending and competition from a more successful academy, the police training school calls on its bungling graduates to act as instructors and make good officers out of a bunch of new recruits even more incompetent than they are. Comedy sequel, starring Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith, Michael Winslow and Art Metrano.

The Golden Child (1986) Film4 7:15pm-9:00pm (1 hour 45 minutes)
A private eye is recruited by a group of Buddhist mystics and sent on a mission to rescue an abducted boy whose supernatural powers will enable him to bring about world peace. However, the kidnapper is actually a demon in human form, determined to ensure the youngster does not fulfil his destiny. Comedy fantasy adventure, starring Eddie Murphy, Charles Dance and Charlotte Lewis.

The Breakfast Club (1985) ITV3 11:05pm-1:10am (2 hours 5 minutes)
Five teenagers who occupy different areas of their school’s social structure are thrown together for a Saturday morning detention. During the day, they analyse their behaviour and find unexpected common ground. Drama, directed by John Hughes and starring Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy and Paul Gleason.

Fun Fact: The film’s gut-wrenching heart-to-heart, where all five kids spill deep, dark secrets, was actually ad-libbed.

Whatever you’re up to this weekend, remember to leave a tip and don’t forget your chargers.

Some hot news has been seeping its way though the TruffleShuffle office this week! Recent reports have revealed that a copy of Action Comics No 1, which features the very first appearance of one of the most iconic superheroes ever Superman, has sold for a little over £1.9m!
.
Becoming the highest price ever paid for a comic book (previously £1.4m for the same edition back in 2011), this jaw-dropping record was reached mainly because this is thought to be the best condition copy remaining and with only 50 thought to be left in total. What’s more is this iconic comic only cost 10 US cents back in 1938!

After the original owner’s death, the family went on to sell it to a dealer in the early 1980s and it was eventually sold to Mr Adams, who runs the Pristine Comics shop in Washington state.

According to seller Darren Adams, this comic was purchased back in 1938 and was kept in a cedar chest in a home in West Virginia, USA for most of its life.

How cool is that? Such an amazing find and also great to know that some of the sale proceeds have been donated to Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, the paralysis charity named after the late Superman actor and his wife.
Looking to get your hands on some amazing Superman merchandise of your very own but don’t have £1.9m to spend? Well you’re in the right place! Take a peep at some of our amazing Superman T-Shirts, accessories and gifts from only £9.99.

We’ve all been there, when there is that one toy, game or gadget that seems like the perfect thing ever. It will solved all of life’s problems, it will make you happier than anything and for as long as you could possibly imagine and well….everyone else had one!

But alas! Not every toy that kept you up at night just thinking about would ever be yours, but don’t let that crush your dreams! That thing you wanted more than ever back then is possibly still up for grabs and now nobody can say that most evil word ‘no’.

To refresh some of these childhood memories and perhaps dive into our back pockets and start waving money at whoever stands in the way of us and our childhood dreams, we thought we would put together some of our top toys and gadgets we wanted back in the day but never got. Take a peep!
.
Talkboy
First used by Kevin in the hit film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, thanks to popular demand, the Talkboy was later created for real and released in 1993 to tween consumers everywhere. Manufactured by TIGER, the Talkboy was a simple handheld cassette player with attached microphone, allowing for instant playback. One of the coolest features was the fast/slow switch, which sped up or slowed playback, causing some pretty funky distortion and endless fun. In other words, you either sounded like a demon or a caffeinated chipmunk. Awesome!
You can pick one up today for around £30-£40.
Mr Frosty
Surely everyone in the land wanted one of these bad boys! It was so simple but so amazing. We all had visions of being the cool kid in the group as friends crowded round taking turns to pop some ice in the top, tive it a few quick turns (yeh right!) and hey presto you had a perfect summer treat full of any flaour you desired. Well! We never had one and can only remember a few people who did. Perhaps our parents saw it for what it was.

You can pick one up today for £18.99 brand stinking new!

Nintendo Power Glove
This was the best things since…well ever! The Power Glove wasn’t just a neat gaming accessory, it was a real status symbol like having a flashy car or big house gate. The Power Glove was unique for its time, allowing players to use motion to control their games much like people do today using the Wii.
As cool as this was, it did make you look weird and also didn’t really give you the dynamic control you were lead to believe making it harder to play than the standard controller. Not the point though right?

You can pick one up today for around £70-£90.

Game Boy / Game Boy Colour
We loved these! Before the times when you could get the latest games downloaded onto your smartphones and saved on a cloud along with you MP3s and MPEGs (yes, we’re cool and know techie things) the idea of getting to take some of your favourite games and characters with you wherever yo went was simply amazing! We can still remember waiting for our next long car trip and making sure we had spare batteries just so we could live the dream and play some games on the move. Bliss! If you had a game boy colour, you had Pokemon, that was a rule!
You can pick up a old model for around £30 or a colour for around £10-£20. Bargain!
Glo Worm
Glo Worm was THE hot toy in the early 80s! Such a simple idea too. These super cute and hugable worm that glowed became the must0-have thing for kids everywhere and later so did all the Glo Friends too. We just had to collect them all!

You can pick one up today for around £25-£30.

Baby Talk Doll
Now we all know (the guys anyway) that dolla are just plain creepy! Not imagine that but it can talk to you like something our of a classic horror film. Well this was big! All the girlies wanted this more than ever, to tak e care of and call your own. IT was perfect.

These have been solf on ebay for as little as £11!

Transformers
As retro toys come, they don’t get much cooler than Transformers! You could have endless fun trying to get them back into their ‘disguise’ as well as pulling off some pretty big stunts, all the while hoping something doesn’t get snapped off!

Classic 80s G1 toys can be picked up for as little as £30 each.

So there you have them folks! Any other toys you didn’t get growing up that would love to have now? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Thanks!
