Going Bananas for Bananarama!

by James on November 23, 2017

Bananarama, the ultimate 80s girl group, got many a nostalgic pop fan whipped up into a frenzy when they announced a reunion earlier this year.  Almost 30 years after she left, Siobhan Fahey has reunited with Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward putting all the water under the bridge and they’re off on a nationwide tour selling out arenas left, right and centre! Considering all our love and expertise in all things fun and retro we couldn’t very well miss out on this spectacle could we!?  Imagine our delight when we managed to secure tickets for our local venue, the Colston Hall in Bristol, and last night was the night when all our Bananarama dreams came true!

The stage was set with moody synths and a dramatic entrance from the girls in shimmering tight black outfits complete with angular shoulder pads (in what must have been a bit of a nod to the power dressing of the 80s!) to one of their classic tracks Nathan Jones.  It was clear straight away that their music had been suitable beefed up and highlights such as Cruel Summer, Robert De Niro’s Waiting, I Want You Back, Venus and I Heard A Rumour sounded really fresh and modern but still instantly recognisable.

The chemistry between the three of them was electric and Siobhan Fahey joking about how it took her faaar too many years to realise how much she missed the other girls was a really sweet moment.  The three of them also performed the hit Stay which was originally by Shakespeare Sister (the band that Fahey formed with Marcella Detroit after leaving Bananarama) which must felt like a ‘coming full circle’ moment for Siobhan.

The encore of Love In The First Degree seemed to come far too soon and the almost 2 hour set felt like it was all killer, no filler. It really was a masterclass in bringing a vintage act back with a bang, let’s hope they don’t call it quits again after this tour as I would love the chance to see them perform again!

What more is there to say about Prince!? Hugely admired and respected by music fans and critics alike, Prince was a musical powerhouse during the 80s scoring hit after hit with his catchy singles combined with a flamboyant stage presence and extravagant dress sense.

He was arguably the biggest pop star on the planet during that time (with tough competition from Michael Jackson and Madonna!). Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, Let’s Go Crazy, Raspberry Beret, U Got The Look, how can you choose a favourite single of his when there’s so many classics to choose from!?

We’ve got a huge selection of Music T-Shirts at TruffleShuffle and it made me very excited when we got the opportunity to add some Prince T-Shirts into the mix.

Happy Video Games Day everyone!!  Whether you’re a fan of Nintendo, PlayStation, X-Box, Sega, mobile gaming or even retro classics like Atari or the Commodore, today is the day to shut those curtains tight, stock up on snacks and game the day away!

In celebration I’m going to list the favourite gaming moments I’ve had throughout my life and would love to hear some of your own!

This is where it all started, my first ever video game on the NES!  A truly iconic game that has stood the test of time, I’ll never forget discovering the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time.  Mario is still going strong too, every one of his games is almost guaranteed to be an exciting play!

The very first Pokemon game on the Game Boy!  Everyone had their own favourite starter (mine was Squirtle) and who can forget catching their very first Pikachu!?  There were 151 to catch in this first game (did anyone manage to get a Mew?) which seems like a tiny amount compared to the 800+ there are now!

ROUND ONE, FIGHT! My first introduction to Street Fighter was with the second game on the SNES, with only eight characters to choose from it was easy to try them all out and find your favourite, Chun-Li FTW!

The very first Mario Kart!  One of my all time favourite series, from humble beginnings on the SNES we are now up to our eighth instalment with a deluxe re-release on the Nintendo Switch which I think is the best in the series.

“Kick! Punch! It’s all in the mind” I was obsessed with this quirky PlayStation game when it first came out and have fond memories of free-style rapping over every song (usually messing it all up!)

Being a huge fan of Japanese RPGs, Final Fantasy VII came along and blew me away!  A huge expansive story and world to explore that I probably sunk 80+ hours into and probably my favourite selection of characters from the Final Fantasy world.  A remake is due to hit the PS4 in the next year or so and I can’t wait to play it again with updated graphics!

Bringing us bang up to date is the brand new Legend of Zelda game on the Nintendo Switch, possibly the finest game of the whole series (although I’ll always hold a candle to Link’s Awakening on the Game Boy!) it’s a perfect example of how exciting video games can be!

If all this talk of gaming has got your trigger finger itching for some goodies it would be well worth checking out our selection of Gamer Clothing and Gamer TShirts as well as some of the other assorted giftware we have.  We’ve got a great selection and I’ll include some of my favourites below.  Enjoy Video Games Day everyone!!

Transformers fans rejoice!  This week sees the release of the long awaited new film Transformers: The Last Knight and expectations are suitably high!

Humans are at war with the Transformers, and Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving the future lies buried in the secrets of the past and the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Now, it’s up to the unlikely alliance of Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg), Bumblebee, an English lord (Anthony Hopkins) and an Oxford professor (Laura Haddock) to save the world.

Any other plot details are being kept under lock and key but trailers of Optimus Prime fighting Bumblebee has got everyone talking, why are they at war with each other? Could the leader of the Autobots have turned to the dark side?  There have been multiple tag lines used on various promotional material for this new film such as ‘Rethink your heroes’, ‘Every legend hides a secret’ and ‘For One World To Live, The Other Must Die’.  These cryptic clues have got us very excited and we can’t wait to find out the true story!

It’s been reported that this is the last Transformers film that Michael Bay will direct and also rumoured to be following him out the door is Mark Wahlberg, so will the next film follow a new direction?  Either way, Transformers and Michael Bay go hand in hand so enjoy his last film in the franchise while you can!  He recently said in an interview “I’ve done it enough, and I’ve had a great time doing it. I’m going out with a bang on this one, and I feel like you gotta go out while you’re ahead, you know.” which all sounds positive for an action packed film!

You can show your appreciation for Transformers with some of the amazing Transformers TShirts and Cartoon TShirts on our site!  Perfect for rocking up the cinema in!

If you’re off to see the film this weekend we hope you enjoy it and let us know what you thought!

Doctor Who fans rejoice! Following an achingly long 12 month break, Series 10 is due to kick off this weekend and expectations couldn’t be higher!  I’ll warn you now, there may be a couple of light spoilers ahead so tread carefully!

The wonderful Peter Capaldi will be returning as the Doctor (in what has been confirmed as his final series) and he will be joined by a brand new companion in the form of Bill Potts played by Pearl Mackie.  Also, very excitingly, Matt Lucas (who I’ll always remember from Shooting Stars and Little Britain!) will be returning as Nardole, a character who was last seen in the 2015 Christmas Special.
The first episode is called The Pilot and will show The Doctor meeting Bill while working as a lecturer in a University, he then of course whisks her away to his weird and wonderful world. Show writer Steven Moffat has promised that this episode is a great starting point for anyone who’s not seen the show yet, so there’s no excuse not to get involved!

It also wouldn’t be Doctor Who without a couple of scary moments to get us hiding behind the sofa courtesy of the huge range of villains that the series is well known for. It seems that new sidekick Bill is going to get chucked in at the deep end as the first episode is said to feature the greatest of all enemies, The Daleks!

Confirmed to be returning this series is The Master (played by John Simm) who has a long running history with the Doctor, some might say the ultimate version of a frenemy!  Also returning will be Missy (played by Michelle Gomez) who is the female equivalent of The Master, what will happen when these two meet?  Only one way to find out!

If all this talk has got you excited for some treats, we have got a great range of Doctor Who Clothing and Doctor Who Merchandise that any fan is sure to love.  With a range that includes T-Shirts, mugs, duvets and much more we’ve got all you need to help you snuggle up for series premiere this Saturday!
