Pokémon!

Happy Video Games Day everyone!!  Whether you’re a fan of Nintendo, PlayStation, X-Box, Sega, mobile gaming or even retro classics like Atari or the Commodore, today is the day to shut those curtains tight, stock up on snacks and game the day away!

In celebration I’m going to list the favourite gaming moments I’ve had throughout my life and would love to hear some of your own!

This is where it all started, my first ever video game on the NES!  A truly iconic game that has stood the test of time, I’ll never forget discovering the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time.  Mario is still going strong too, every one of his games is almost guaranteed to be an exciting play!

The very first Pokemon game on the Game Boy!  Everyone had their own favourite starter (mine was Squirtle) and who can forget catching their very first Pikachu!?  There were 151 to catch in this first game (did anyone manage to get a Mew?) which seems like a tiny amount compared to the 800+ there are now!

ROUND ONE, FIGHT! My first introduction to Street Fighter was with the second game on the SNES, with only eight characters to choose from it was easy to try them all out and find your favourite, Chun-Li FTW!

The very first Mario Kart!  One of my all time favourite series, from humble beginnings on the SNES we are now up to our eighth instalment with a deluxe re-release on the Nintendo Switch which I think is the best in the series.

“Kick! Punch! It’s all in the mind” I was obsessed with this quirky PlayStation game when it first came out and have fond memories of free-style rapping over every song (usually messing it all up!)

Being a huge fan of Japanese RPGs, Final Fantasy VII came along and blew me away!  A huge expansive story and world to explore that I probably sunk 80+ hours into and probably my favourite selection of characters from the Final Fantasy world.  A remake is due to hit the PS4 in the next year or so and I can’t wait to play it again with updated graphics!

Bringing us bang up to date is the brand new Legend of Zelda game on the Nintendo Switch, possibly the finest game of the whole series (although I’ll always hold a candle to Link’s Awakening on the Game Boy!) it’s a perfect example of how exciting video games can be!

If all this talk of gaming has got your trigger finger itching for some goodies it would be well worth checking out our selection of Gamer Clothing and Gamer TShirts as well as some of the other assorted giftware we have.  We’ve got a great selection and I’ll include some of my favourites below.  Enjoy Video Games Day everyone!!

As you maaaay or may not (perhaps!) or spotted, Father’s Day 2017 edition is fast approaching and things here at Truffle Towers are starting to get pretty dad-tastic!

With loads of us franticly searching the shops and the cyberweb for the newest, coolest and most perfectest Father’s Day Gifts in all the land to really spoil our old man this year, it’s safe to say we’ve had the dad word spinning in our brains. Inspired by all the dad talk and goings on, we thought we would take some time to look back at some of our favourite dads (we’ve said dad to much already huh) from the big and small screens, see what they’ve been up to and perhaps find out where they are now.

Let’s jump in!

Henry Jones Sr. (Sean Connery) – Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Professor of medieval literature, expert on Grail lore, the father of archaeologist Indiana Jones, we’re pretty sure most people will know and love Jones Sr. Somewhat of a …..difficult so and so, it’s hard to imagine anyone other than professional Scotsman Sean Connery donning his trusty hat and snatching his faithful umbrella. Now, we’re not saying him and Indie had the best father and son relationship to start with, but it’s safe to say their adventures together sure bring them closer and all with a touch of whit and good old fashioned competition.

So, what’s he be up to? Turns out…. A LOT! Starring in such films as (deep breath); The Hunt for Red October, Just Cause, The Rock, Entrapment, and Finding Forrester. Not bed eh! It’s safe to say Sean has had a very fruitful career and is certainly more than a household name. Retired from the big screen, he is currently living in Kranidi, Greece where he can spend time with family and friends including fellow movie star Michael Caine.

Star Wars Original Stormtrooper Glass Tumbler

This former 007 would be able to enjoy a drink from his homeland in style with this nifty little tumbler.

George McFly (Crispin Glover) – Back to the Future

Oh George! Cautious, nerdy, insecure and a total dude with it! Played by Crispin Glover who tooootally nailed the role as the nerdy sci-fi loving guy who is used to being pushed around. Cripsin has gone on to feature a whole host of films from Wild at Heart, Charlie’s Angels, Beowulf, Alice in Wonderland, to hit show American Gods. Not only starring, he has also produced films through his company including ‘What Is It?’ and ‘It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine.’ Did we mention he also released an album? Oh yeah – check out this album called The Big Problem ≠ The Solution. The Solution = Let It Be. Not enough? He has also written between 15 and 20 books which are classic titles, rearranged and with passages removed to create new stories.

Currently living in Silverlake, California, Crispin continues to pour his time into his creative outlets including music and film production. Busy boy!

Boxed Star Wars I Am Your Father Darth Vader Mug

He came to him one night (from the planet Vulcan??) offering words of… advice. With this nifty mug, he’ll be sure to never forget that night.

Noah Levenstein/Jim’s Dad (Eugene Levy) – American Pie

It’s Jim’s dad! Always there to offer friendly advice… even when it wasn’t asked for. Full of work experience and never afraid to get involved, Jim’s dad has an undying love for Jim which is put to the test a number of times but never wavers. A real solid character who will always do his best for Jim. Solid dad material! But where is he now?
Turns out Jim’s dad has gone pretty damn far. 60+ films? Yep! Levy has been nominated for and won countless awards for his films including a New York Film Critics Circle Award and a Grammy Award. Not to shabby!

So what’s he been up so since American Pie? Turns out a lot. You might have seen him in… Best in Show, Serendipity, Bringing Down the House, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, Night at the Museum 2, and heard him in Finding Dory as Charlie. Levy is a Member of the Order of Canada and a recipient of The Governor General’s Performing Arts Award – the foremost honour presented for excellence in the performing arts.

Still working hard, you’ll certainly be seeing more from Jim’s… sorry Eugene be it on TV or the big screen.

Retro Silver Classic Digital Watch from Casio

A real classic dad needs a real classic Casio timepiece right? This silver digital watch come with a black dial for a casual yet classic look. With this beauty, you’ll always be on time to offer quality advice.

Hal (Bryan Cranston) – Malcolm in the Middle

Hal…. you total legend! Nothing better than a comedy dad right? We’ll if ‘lord of the dads’ was an official title (which it totally should be!), then Hal would be getting our vote for the position.Father to father to Francis, Reese, Malcolm, Dewey, and Jamie, Hal is put to the ultimate test as a dad almost daily with any number of odd goings on. Like a lot of households, he pretty much becomes one of the kids with his much more relaxed approach to life then wife Lois. Proper fun!

Bryan is by no means a one trick pony though…. far from it! He has transformed himself multiple times over the years going from a goof to a disciplined and protecting figure and given award worthy performances (4x Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series & Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series twice) in block buster films and binge-worthy TV shows.

So, what’s he been up to since Malcolm in the Middle left our screen back in 2006? Voicing characters in both Family Guy and American Dad!, Bryan became the face of TV sensation Breaking Bad. We’re not even sure TV sensation even covers what Breaking Bad became. Maybe phenomenon? Masterpiece? Whatever you wish, it was huge and he was truly outstanding throughout.  Since this performance as Walter White, Bryan has starred in cinema hit Godzilla, Drive, Argo, The Infiltrator, Trumbo, and Wakefield to name a few. You won’t be struggling to see Bryan in more screen gold that’s for sure.

Men’s Pokemon Pikachu And Friends Boxer Shorts

What do you get the man who seems to spend a lot of time in his tighty whities? Funky Pokémon pants of course! Sure to add some pizzazz to his casual look.

Steve Stevens (Tom Virtue) – Even Stevens

Everyone loves a quirky Dad right? They think they’re super serious but really, nothing silly they do will ever be a total surprise. Not imagine that Dad’s also a lawyer… we present “Stiffie” Stevens. Running for just a few years from 2000 to 2003 (we know! Total classic gone so soon), Even Stevens remains firmly lodged in our memories as having a super cool intro, weird plot lines and one of the best TV Dads going.

So where has Tom been and where is he now? Well… turns out he’s done some cool stuff! Starring in a whole heap of TV shows including; Nip/Tuck, Entourage, ER, CSI, Sons of Anarchy, The Office (US) and more. Film work you ask? Sure! He has starred in some big titles including Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Iron Man 3. His upcoming work includes TV roles in Conan and I’m Dying Up Here so stay tuned for more peeps!

Men’s Blue Mr Men Mr Silly T-Shirt

He’s funny, sill and he would look ace in this Mr Men TShirt! Right? Sure to raise a few smiles.

Al Bundy (Ed O’Neill) – Married with Children

Now it’s hard…. nay impossible to talk about classic on screen dads without mentioning the mighty Al Bundy. Husband of Peggy Bundy, father of Kelly and Bud Bundy, Al was your classic grumpy dad. Sure he was mean at times, didn’t always get what he wanted and loved to make fun of people but hey, somehow we forgave him because it was just so damn funny!

So, who was behind Al? Ed O’Neill landed the role back in 1987 and he never looked back. Playing the role for ten years until 1997, Ed later went on to perform in The Bone Collector with Denzel Washington, and a number of TV roles including Big Apple, Dragnet, 8 Simple Rules, The West Wing, and famously Modern Family. Modern Family has grown to become a jewel in ABC’s crown and is still going strong from its launch back in 2009. If you’ve never seen it…. seriously you need it in your life.

Men’s White Mr Happy Mr Men T-Shirt

…because seeing the king of grumpy rocking a Mr Happy TShirt would be the best things ever right? Yup!

Red Forman (Kurtwood Smith) – That ’70s Show

As TV dads go, sometimes you just need a no-nonsense, good old American one right? Well, look no further then good old Red. Battle hardened and with a classic dry humour, Red truly completed the line-up of That ’70s Show which aired from 1998 to 2006.

But where is old man Red now? Currently living in Glendale, California, Kurtwood is still busier than ever with numerous film roles over the years, and regular TV work including Rick and Morty, Agent Carter and currently Patriot, an American comedy-drama series. If you watch enough TV, you’ll be sure to catch him in something cool.

Vintage Canvas Captain America Army Wash Bag

He’s a stern military man acting in both World War II veteran Korean War veteran, making our Amy inspired Captain America wash bag a great tribute to his time served…and it’s pretty darn practical too!

Jim Robinson (Alan Dale) – Neighbours

Now this is a classic TV dad! As one of the twelve original Neighbours characters (pretty cool tittle to have right!), where he made his small screen debut on the very first episode of the show ever back in 1985. Father of Paul, Scott, Lucy and Glen, and the husband of Anne Robinson and later Beverly Robinson, it’s safe to say he had a lot on his plate. Never afraid to give an honest answer, Jim loved cars and always tried to put his family first.

Appearing in over 1000 episodes before being dramatically killed off in 1993, Jim was a loud and very memorable character who became a real anchor for the show and the stories within. So, what’s he been up to since he left Ramsay street and where is he now?

Well…. chances are you’ve also probably seen him in something good in recent years too! Working on some hit shows including; The O.C, Lost, 24, NCIS, The West Wing, The X-Files, The Killing, and Homeland, he has also hit the big screen with roles in; The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Star Trek: Nemesis, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, aaaand Entourage. Phew!

Currently living in Los Angeles, California, Dale is working on TV show Once Upon a Time.

Awesome 80′s Trivia Cards

As one of the pivotal characters from 80s TV, what better gift than the ultimate 80s challenge with our 80′s Trivia Cards.

Mel Horowitz (Dan Hedaya) – Clueless

If you grew up even around the 90s, the chances are you’ve seen classic movie Clueless a few times over…. each year! Well undoubtedly one of the biggest characters in this modern classic, Mel nails the overprotective, grumpy, stressed out workaholic dad. Protective, hard-working and not afraid to say what he really thought, we know Mel always had his kids interests at heart and worked hard to provide for them. Traditional and grumpy. Classic movie dad!

So what else has he been in and where is he now?? Well, he’s still busy! Working in a number of movies and TV shows, Dan has also worked in theatre with some Broadway performances to his name. Oh yeah. Films you can find in include; Commando, The Addams Family, The Usual Suspects and even Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. You might have just heard of that one. He has also worked on TV classic ER.

So it’s official, Pokémon GO is here, and…well… it is absolutely HUGE. Like bigger than the Death Star big! Frankly, if you’re not using your phone to walk around and catch virtual creatures in your area we have no idea why you even have a phone!

With so much buzz surrounding this groundbreaking AR adventure game (for those who never discovered Ingress at least), it seems Pokémon is right back at the top of the pile and bigger and better than ever. Talk about a comeback! From battling it out on our trusty Game Boy colour back in the day to talking stats and evolutions with friends down the pub, Pokémon has always brought people together and turns out is still as cool as ever.

Now it’s back in our lives in style, we figured we would pop together some really cool and useful tips that we have picked up along the way. Who knows they might just give your game a little boost! For free! Sit back and check out our Top Tips for Pokémon Go!

You can grab Pikachu as your starter Pokémon

Yep believe it! Pretty much THE face of the entire Pokémon empire, Pikachu can be grabbed right from the get go. Perhaps not so useful for all you eager players out there already catching your way through the levels, but as a new player when you’re asked by the Professor to catch you very first Pokémon you will be met with some old faces including Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur. However! If you walk away from them (literally walk away), and continue to walk away from them until your phone vibrates the three classic stater Pokémon will appear again. Walk away again, and repeat 3 to 5 times and eventually Pikachu should appear.

When exploring, vary your surroundings

So just like you would fine in the real world, different Pokémon can be found in different areas. So for some examples, Rock types can be found near Quarries, Water types can be found near….you guessed it, Ghost types can be found near cemeteries and Electric types near power stations. We’re not suggesting to climb a mountain or break into a industrial area but instead vary where you hunt a bit.

When you capture a gym, defend it!

So you’re at at least level five and the real fun has begun, setting to work capturing your local gym will earn you some big rewards so well worth doing but hey….nothing good comes easy. Other players will be looking for a taste of of high life so be prepared to defend your gym by leaving good Pokémon there. Good defending will also earn extra bonuses and keep you in a good position.

Master your power

Now we don’t mean Pokémon powers or even superhuman powers, we mean getting the most from your device to keep you playing. It’s no secret that playing Pokémon GO pretty much smashes your battery so be smart. Activate the Pokémon GO battery saver mode in the settings option, dim the screen brightness, close unused background apps you might have running or perhaps invest in a battery charging pack to give you some extra juice on the go.

Throw a Curve ball

Not figuratively, literally! When you’re about to catch a critter, hold down on your Poké Ball and spin it in a circular motion with your finger. This will start it spinning, and if you hit and capture a Pokémon with this move you’ll gain some extra XP. Score!

Get out and play!

Possibly the best tip really and perhaps not one which can be avoided too much. The best way to enjoy the game, earn the good stuff and continue your amazing work is just to get out and explore….safely. Walking distances will help everything along and will help you bump into new characters and places. Again try to vary the locations, location types and even time of day and keep in mind that seeking landmarks in your area will be some great treats along with them too. The more you play, the more XP you will earn and the better everything will get.

So there you have them peeps! Hopefully we’ve passed on some handy hints to help you along you way. Know any other cool tips to help you fellow players? Shout them out below in the comments section!

Naturally, as veteran Pokémon trainers we’ve stocked a whole heap of Pokémon merchandise over the years and it seems that no more than ever is the time to grab a slice of the action and start showing off your love in style! Check out our latest catches including some fab Pokémon jewellery…

Howdy TruffleShufflers! Did you have a lovely weekend? If yours was anything like mine, then you had a good long browse through your movie collection to find some old favourites and spent a lot of time binge-watching that series that you’ve just got into. Am I right?
Speaking of old favourites, I’ve been trawling the deepest depths of Netflix to find their….
.
Top 10 Retro Movies and Shows!
.
So here goes, get ready for some serious nostalgia and hopefully, a little inspiration for something to to keep you smiling and fill the evenings now you’re back at work or school or wherever again.
.
1.    The Addams Family (1991) Who could forget this macabre comedy classic? Wednesday and Pugsley fight to save their home from the evil developer, desperate to get her hands on the family fortune by manipulating an imposter to pose as the long-lost cousin Fester, but nobody counted on the imposter being the real deal!
2.    Sister Act (1992) and Sister Act 2 (1993) I don’t know about you, but both of these movies were in my Dad’s VHS collection back in the day and watched them both until the tape got chewed and snapped. A pair of classic comedies in which Delores (Whoopi Goldberg) goes into witness protection as a Nun after seeing her gangster boyfriend commit murder. Her talents for choreography lead her to form a choir, firstly with the nuns and secondly with the unruly kids that go to the Catholic school, ultimately saving the church and school respectively. Yes it’s basically the same movie twice, but you can’t have too much of a good thing!
3.    Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) This twisty toon adventure is a magnificent technological display of real-time action and cartoon madness. Made in a time long before Pixar had developed their cutting edge animation software, every animated frame in this movie was hand drawn over the live-action cells and painstakingly coloured in post production. Imagine that! Bill Murray was in the running for Bob Hoskins’ role, but couldn’t get back to the director in time. He reportedly screamed aloud at a dinner party when he realised he had missed his shot. As you would!
4.    Speaking of Bill Murray, it just wouldn’t be a retro movie rundown without giving Ghostbusters (1984) a mention. With the third movie due to be shot next year (Yes that’s right, there’s going to be a Ghostbusters 3!) it’s time to revisit the original and laugh your socks off all over again. Also, give Stripes (1981) a go, Bill Murray and the late, great Harold Ramis team up as infantrymen that join the army during the cold war, imagining that basic training will be much like a health spa to get them back into shape, they were wrong…
Ghostbusters TShirt
5.    White Men Can’t Jump (1992) is a brilliant buddy movie of sorts, filled with gritty dialogue and great basketball action scenes. As Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes team up to hustle local ball-players their characters grow and grow through hatred, suspicion and greed to learn to love each other and ultimately win the grand final as equals. If you can ignore Rosie Perez’s ridiculous voice, you can definitely enjoy this wonderful, heartfelt lycra-clad 90’s classic. Random Trivia: Woody never did make a real slam dunk, the hoop at the end is actually nine-and-a-half feet high, not the regulation ten feet. (But we’ll let him off!)
6.    Party on dudes! Its Wayne’s World! (1992) Surely this one needs no introduction, let’s just sit and remember everyone’s favourite scene…
7.    Shut up! It’s, like, so totally Clueless! (1995) This wonderfully satiric adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, in which the lead can’t help matchmaking everyone around her is a laugh-a-minute mockery of all things Beverley Hills. Filled with homage, irony and subtlety it’s no wonder this brilliantly executed teen flick is now recognised as one of the best films of the era. Random Trivia: though Paul Rudd’s character is cast as being several years older than Cher and her friends, Stacey Dash who plays Dionne is actually three years older than him!
Ladies Clueless Ugh As If! Slub Scoop Neck T-Shirt
8.    Enter the danger zone! That’s right, in at number 8, it’s Top Gun (1986) With Tom Cruise at his steely finest, portraying the hotshot pilot, Maverick, opposite the chisel-jawed Val Kilmer, Iceman. Fighting prejudice and his own hubris, Maverick must prove that he is worthy of the title, Top Gun. Random Trivia: The real top gun school in California make staff pay a $5 fine every time they quote the movie.
Top Gun Maverick T-Shirt
9.    Here’s another show that needs no introduction, unless you lived in a cave throughout the late 90s, you’ll most likely be aware of a funny little Japanese show that took the world by storm, Pokémon! (1997) I’ve no doubt that anyone reading this will almost certainly have tried to catch ‘em all at some point, done a shady deal for a shiny Charizard card and spent all their pocket money to win a cuddly Pikachu at the fair. Am I right? The first season, the Indigo League is now on Netflix and believe me, it’s just as good as it ever was.
10.    Whilst we’re on awesome kids cartoons, they’ve also just added a load of Cartoon Network shows including Johnny Bravo, Courage the Cowardly Dog  and Dexter’s Laboratory. “Omelette du fromage!!!” Need I say more?
Johnny Bravo Whoa Mama Framed Print Dexters Lab T-Shirt
So! We have come to the end of the road. What do you think? Did I miss anything? Have I inspired anyone to watch something new, or something they haven’t seen in ages? I hope so.
I hope you all have a great week and remember to like and share and all that good stuff. Also, pop over to the website to buy some awesome Movie T-Shirts or Cartoon T-Shirts inspired by many of the shows and flicks mentioned above. (But not all of them, sorry about that!)
