The Doctor's Back! Here's What We're Expecting From Season 10

Doctor Who fans rejoice! Following an achingly long 12 month break, Series 10 is due to kick off this weekend and expectations couldn't be higher!  I'll warn you now, there may be a couple of light spoilers ahead so tread carefully!

The wonderful Peter Capaldi will be returning as the Doctor (in what has been confirmed as his final series) and he will be joined by a brand new companion in the form of Bill Potts played by Pearl Mackie.  Also, very excitingly, Matt Lucas (who I'll always remember from Shooting Stars and Little Britain!) will be returning as Nardole, a character who was last seen in the 2015 Christmas Special.

The first episode is called The Pilot and will show The Doctor meeting Bill while working as a lecturer in a University, he then of course whisks her away to his weird and wonderful world. Show writer Steven Moffat has promised that this episode is a great starting point for anyone who's not seen the show yet, so there's no excuse not to get involved!

It also wouldn't be Doctor Who without a couple of scary moments to get us hiding behind the sofa courtesy of the huge range of villains that the series is well known for. It seems that new sidekick Bill is going to get chucked in at the deep end as the first episode is said to feature the greatest of all enemies, The Daleks!

A Stranger Things Inspired Collection

The TV show that everyone's been talking about this year is of course, Stranger Things.  An amazing new series that combines 80s nostalgia with a creepy horror/sci-fi storyline, a great cast (which sees the return of Winona Ryder) and a glorious synth soundtrack, it reminds us of some of our favourite 80s films like The Goonies and ET which can only be a good thing!

Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. The plot follows the disappearance of a young boy and the lengths that his group of friends go to as they try to find him, along the way they meet a telekinetic young girl called Eleven with the powers to help them in their search, we don't want to spoil anymore of the plot but it's a fascinating watch!

It's a show that couldn't be more us, so inspired by the series we have put together a range of Stranger Things T-Shirts that any fan is sure to love!  Whether you're favourite character was Eleven, you were intrigued by the mystery of The Upside Down or even if you loved the sharp fashion sense of Barb there's a tee for everyone!

Suicide Squad: The Movie Review

Critics haven’t been kind to Suicide Squad, but I’ve been looking forward to this film for so long that I wasn’t about to let them dampen my spirits. As a lifelong fan of comics I’ve always had a soft spot for a well crafted super villain and this is a film that’s bursting with them!

At the centre of the story is Amanda Waller, a ruthless government official who has spent years tracking down and imprisoning the worst criminal offenders the DC universe has to offer, with the goal to create a “suicide squad”, a crack team of super-powered soldiers that can be dispatched to combat any new terror attacks, after the events of Man of Steel and Batman Vs Superman.

The squad comprises of lesser known villains from DC's roster, especially characters that have rumbled with the likes of Batman and The Flash over the years, and although you may not be familiar with all the characters, it doesn’t make them any less compelling. The standout performance belongs to actress Margot Robbie as the scene-stealing Harley Quinn, and despite having no real super powers of her own she kicks ass like the best of them, with her unhinged sense of humour providing a much needed dose of fun. The same sadly can't be said for Jared Leto, who plays Harley's love interest (and easily DC's most recognisable supervillain), The Joker. Neither sinister nor funny, it's a relief that Leto's gurning version of the Clown Prince has only a minor role in the film as a whole, and it's timely a reminder of what a hard act Heath Ledger must be to follow...

The other squad members were a mix of fun and fails: Will Smith as the gunslinging hitman Deadshot was perfect blockbuster stuff, dropping one-liners like a pro but also serving as the emotional core of the film, as the squad occasionally struggle with what it means to be a bad guy. Jai Courtney's beer-swilling thug Captain Boomerang will probably make a few Aussie eyes roll, but Courtney was a hoot all the same. The other team members are a mixed bag and the film struggles to portion out screen time well, with characters like Katana barely registering amid the whirlwind of action and punchlines. Cara Delevingne as the mysterious Enchantress is probably the biggest misfire on show; the character seems awkwardly one dimensional, and throughout the whole film I just couldn’t shake off the image of a supermodel that’s a bit of a party animal, and who’s probably a load of fun to have a few drinks with!

Cowabunga! 10 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About... Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

In celebration of our fab new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles T-Shirts and in anticipation of the release of the brand new reboot film which hits our shores on 17th October we are dedicating this blog post to Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Donatello.  I am proud to present to you 10 things you (probably) didn't know about everyone's favourite ass-kicking reptiles.

1. The turtles started life as a brainstorming session between friends Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman in 1983, they found the idea of a slow, cold-blooded reptile with the speed and grace of a Japanese ninja very funny and the concept grew from there.  Using money from a tax refund and borrowing from Kevin's uncle they formed Mirage Studios and self published the very first issue of the Turtles comic.  From humble beginnings...

2. This original comic series was actually pretty adult, the turtles would slash and stab their enemies with their weapons and they even killed off Shredder in the first issue!  They even liked to drink a spot of booze and throw around a swear word or two, but then don't we all!  Shredder was brought back to life in 1987 when he became the Turtle's arch nemesis.

3. Shredder was inspired by Kevin Eastmen seeing a large cheese grater and inquiring "Can you imagine a character with weapons on his arms like this?"

Mamma Mia! 10 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About... Mario!

In honour of the absolutely amazing eighth instalment of the Mario Kart series and our fab new Mario T-Shirts, we have decided to pay tribute to Nintendo's finest icon.  As a long time gamer since the NES days myself, I am very proud to present to you '10 things you (probably) didn't know about Mario!'

Mario T-Shirt

1 - Mario's first appearance was in the game Donkey Kong but he was originally named Jumpman.  Nintendo must have realised their hero was deserving of something better and his name was changed because of an uncanny resemblance to the landlord of Nintendo’s US office, Mario Segale, who had been busy chasing Nintendo for rent money!

2 - Donkey Kong was originally intended to be a Popeye game but Nintendo couldn't secure the rights so had to create their own cast of characters.  Popeye was replaced with Mario (or Jumpman), Olive Oyl with Pauline (the damsel in distress) and Bluto with Donkey Kong, a legacy was born!

3 - Mario was originally a carpenter when he appeared in Donkey Kong.  Since then he became better known as a plumber but has also been a doctor, kart racer, archaeologist, referee, golfer, tennis star,  typing tutor and many others.  Has he no ends to his talents!
