Great Scott! Back for the Future???

Being a child of the 80s meant that I grew up being ‘WOWed’ by a whole host of amazing movies such as Goonies, E.T, Labyrinth and Ghostbusters. But there is one movie that I watched so much I managed to wear out the VHS tape, this movie was Back to the Future 2.

If you haven’t ever seen Back to the Future 2, where have you been?

The story is about a character called Marty McFly who has only just got back from the past (Back to the Future), when he is picked up by Dr. Emmett Brown in his DeLorean time machine and sent through time to the future, 2015 to be precise. Marty’s job in the future is to pose as his son to prevent him being thrown in prison. Unfortunately, things get worse when the future changes the present. Check out the original trailer below…

Being a car and gadget obsessed youngster there were a whole host of reasons to make me excited about this movie, the DeLorean time machine now being able to fly, Hover Boards, pretty much everything to do with 2015 (The future looks amazing) but there is one thing in this movie I remember wanting more than anything else. Marty McFly’s Nike Sneakers! The light-up emblem and power laces blew me away. These are the best shoes never made….

Not any more….. 22 years later and Nike have (kind of) made my dreams come true with the 2011 Nike MAG….

Want to know more about these famous sneaks? Well, The glowing LED panel is there as is the electroluminescent NIKE logo on the strap. The foam support in the ankle and toe box have been increased for comfort which differs from the original in the “Back to the Future” movie. The MAG can be illuminated by pinching the corner of the high top. The feature itself makes it the first rechargeable footwear from Nike. Each shoe holds a five hour charge.

And while the power-lacing system isn’t a reality just yet (apparently Nike is working on it), from the 8th September Nike listed a limited run of 1500 pairs of MAGs on ebay. 150 pairs have been selling everyday and will continue upto the 18th September. With prices ranging from $1200 to $4250 you will need fairly deep pockets to get your hands on some. Click here to go to the Nike MAG ebay pages.

If you are lucky enough to get your hands on some of these fabulous shoes, not only will you be the envy of all your mates but you can be firm in the knowledge that your love of all things retro has helped out a great charity. All net proceeds from the sale of Nike MAGs will be going to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. I think you’ll agree, this is a WIN-WIN situation!

If any of our fans are lucky enough to actually get a pair, send a pic into our Facebook page so we can all be extremely jealous of you!!

The First Avenger.

This July, there’s excitement brewing in the TruffleShuffle office… On the 29th of July the man who is not afraid to mix stripes with stars will be hitting the big screens all around the UK. Some may think this is some kind of fashion faux-pas, but for Captain America it’s the only option….

So with the movie just around the corner, what better time for me to fill you in on a bit of background information on this fighter for Liberty and Justice….. Captain America‘s real name is Steve Rogers. During World War 2 Rogers was turned away by the US military for being too sickly and weak but Rogers was given a second chance to serve his country by joining a top secret military project to create the world’s first super soldier. The procedure involving Super-Soldier Serum and “Vita-Ray” treatment was a success but the experiment was ambushed by the evil Red Skull (Head of Nazi terrorist activities, the commander of terrorist organization HYDRA & soon to become Roger’s greatest foe). Unfortunately for Red Skull, the scientists were also killed during the ambush taking the super soldier formula with them.

Powers

The serum and ray treatment turns Roger’s into the pinnacle of human perfection, giving him super human strength, speed, agility and extraordinarily keen reflexes and senses. He has blended judo, western boxing, kickboxing, and gymnastics into his own unique fighting style and has also trained in multiple martial arts and weapons training. His weapon of choice is possible one of the most iconic in the Marvel universe, a shield.

Captain America’s iconic shield

Made from a near indestructible mix of adamantium steel and vibranium alloy this shield is able to withstand massive impacts from enemy gun fire and huge energy blasts. Captain America utilizes this unique weapon by throwing it at his enemies (sometimes multiple targets) and luckily for him, his trusty tool then returns to his side, just in time to protect him from enemy attack.

The Movie

“Captain America: The First Avenger” will focus on the early days of The Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program and becomes the super soldier that is Captain America. And with help from Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter he’s set to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization led by Red Skull. Captain American is played by Hollywood star Chris Evans – the Fantastic Four actor has famously bulked-up for his role as Steve Rogers, a young soldier deemed unfit for military service who volunteers for a top secret project that transforms him into a human-fighting machine.

Other famous faces to star alongside Evans include Tommy Lee Jones, Dominic Cooper and Matrix villain, Hugo Weaving as Captain America’s arch-nemesis, Red Skull.

Chunk – A great British t-shirt brand!

Hi my name’s Simon and I’m a Chunkaholic. There I said it. Now, If you haven’t come across any of our men’s T-shirts from Chunk then you’re in for a right treat. I’ll start with a quick history lesson…

Chunk started back in 2001 having launched some designs all based on the Haynes Car Manuals iconic cover illustrations. Ten years on and Chunk is now one of the UK’s leading urban street-wear labels. Chunk’s ethos was, and still is, to produce great designs on quality garments, targeting 18-35 year old males with a strong emphasis on cool nostalgia. Famous for their bold graphics, tongue-in-cheek humour and unique design quirks, Chunk now has worked with some of the biggest licenses in the world, which include Marvel, Hanna Barbera, Fremantle Media (Danger Mouse) and Lucas Films (Star Wars) – for which Chunk won a licensing award in 2007 for its Star Wars range. The future promises to be incredibly bright for Chunk as the brand expands into even more retro goodness further cementing its reputation as a great British brand.

With TruffleShuffle.com offering a massive range of amazing retro t-shirts, gifts and accessories we get to see cool new stuff all the time. But for me nothing matches the excitement of a new Chunk catalogue turning up because I know it will be full of amazing new designs. It’s their ‘outside the box’ approach to designing a t-shirt that I love, generally taking a familiar character such as Darth Vader or Mr.T and putting them in an unusual situation, IT’S GENIUS. I could only wish that when I’m down at the coast for a cheeky weekend surf that I catch a Stormtrooper ‘out the back’ riding that perfect wave or driving past my local scrap yard would reveal that Mr.T, Luke and Bo Duke, Michael Knight and the Trotters famous ‘rides’ had reached the end of their lives (probably due to the government Scrappage scheme!!). Only t-shirts from Chunk make this happen.

Cycling Superheroes

Being a keen cyclist I was pedalling my way across the world wide web the other night when I came across some some fantastic illustrations by graphic designer/illustrator/fellow bike fiend Mike Joos.

If like me, you grew up reading comics you’ll know some superheroes can fly through the air, some can scale skyscrapers and others can metamorphose into other beings. However, I don’t remember them ever resorting to riding bicycles! Joos, has created the funny side of these superheroes with these illustrations in which each character rides a customized bike. What is even more clever is that each of the bicycles is somehow connected to the character that sits on it.

Thunder, Thunder, Thundercats…..

Warner Bros Animation have teamed up with Japanese animation company Studio 4°C (The people behind Batman: Gotham Knights & The Animatrix) to reboot the Thundercats series later this year.

If you don’t remember the Thundercats from the first time round, it was a cheesy 80’s cartoon that followed the adventures of a group of cat-like humanoid aliens and it was AWESOME. Here’s pictures of the original and the revamped cast to jog your memory.

Original
The Revamped Version with a heavy anime feel

Cartoon Network are planning to show an initial 26 episodes and it marks Warner Bros. Animation’s first ever anime series!

Check out the trailer and let us know what you think….

Here’s what Warner Bros. Animation has to say about the revival:

Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, “ThunderCats” characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

They haven’t released much more info as yet but in our humble opinions and having watched the trailer, we reckon it looks set to have less cheese but more breasts! Never a bad thing 🙂

What do you guys think? Are you excited by the idea of Thundercats 2.0 or should it be left well alone? To be honest – the original was so damn good, it’s going to be pretty tough to beat. Lets just hope they do one of our favourite cartoons justice!

Thundercats HO!!!

**RANDOM FACT ALERT** – Larry Kenney the original voice of Lion-O in the 1980s series is now the voice of King Claudus, the father of Tygra & Lion-O!
