The Weekly Retro Movie Rundown – 455

Ring the bells! We're back with our first retro movie rundown of 2022 and boy, do we have plenty of classics heading your way! Buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride.

SATURDAY 8th January

Dumb and Dumber (1994) 5STAR 10:15am-12:30pm

Dimwitted Rhode Island limousine driver Lloyd Christmas and his equally vacuous friend Harry Dunne embark on a disaster-fraught cross-country trip to Aspen, where they hope to reunite a briefcase with its female owner. However, the pair are unaware the case contains a $1million ransom they would have been better leaving well alone. Farrelly brothers comedy, starring Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Lauren Holly, Teri Garr and Mike Starr.

The Mask (1994) 5STAR 12:30pm-2:35pm

A timid bank clerk stumbles on an ancient mask, which endows whoever wears it with untold superhuman powers, unbridled self-confidence and an irresistible charm for the ladies. Unfortunately, he earns the enmity of a local gangster for daring to flirt with his girlfriend - and when the crook gets wind of the artefact's existence, he covets the power for himself. Comic-book comedy, with Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz, Peter Riegert and Peter Greene.

Splash (1984) Channel 5 1:05pm-3:15pm

A lonely New Yorker is rescued from drowning by a mermaid, who falls in love with him and assumes human form so she can seek him out in Manhattan. He is soon equally smitten, and she resolves to keep her true nature a secret from him. However, an obsessive scientist suspects the truth and plans to prove it. Romantic fantasy comedy, starring Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah and John Candy.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) E4 3:00pm-6:00pm

The war between the shape-shifting robots erupts once again, as the first of the evil Decepticons leads an attack on Earth to locate an ancient planet-destroying machine. Hapless teenager Sam Witwicky is caught in the middle of the ensuing conflict as he holds the key to discovering the location of the device. Sci-fi adventure sequel, starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox.

Cast Away (2000) Channel 5 3:15pm-6:10pm

A manager for an American courier service has to fend for himself when a plane crash leaves him stranded alone on a desert island. Initially panic-stricken, he overcomes his terror to survive for four years on his own before building a raft and setting off on an epic journey back home. Adventure drama, starring Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, Nick Searcy, Lari White and Chris Noth.

Bee Movie (2007) Film4 2:55pm-4:55pm

A bee wearies of a life dedicated to producing honey and decides to leave his hive. During his foray into the wider world, he befriends a florist. However, when he realises what becomes of the honey his species toils so hard to make, he resolves to sue the entire human race for stealing from his fellow-creatures. Animated comedy, with the voices of Jerry Seinfeld, Renee Zellweger and Chris Rock.

Oliver! (1968) Sony Movies Classic 3:40pm-6:35pm

The Oscar-winning musical version of the stage play based on Charles Dickens' classic tale about a lonely workhouse orphan who ends up on the cold streets of London, where he falls under the wing of petty crook Fagin and his gang of young backstreet thieves. Featuring the iconic songs Food, Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, As Long as He Needs Me and You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two. Starring Ron Moody, Mark Lester, Oliver Reed, Jack Wild, Harry Secombe, Shani Wallis and Leonard Rossiter.

Mr Bean's Holiday (2007) ITV2 5:25pm-7:15pm

The bumbling fool wins first prize in the church raffle - a trip to France and a video camera. His travels cause chaos as he disrupts a film shoot in Cannes, to the fury of its megalomaniac director, and is then accused of kidnapping a youngster. Comedy, starring Rowan Atkinson, Willem Dafoe, Emma de Caunes and Max Baldry.

Robin Hood (1990) Sony Movies 6:50pm-9:00pm

A Saxon nobleman is declared an outlaw for protecting a poacher from a cruel Norman knight. Hiding out in a forest, he recruits a group of bandits and leads them in a campaign against the corrupt Norman aristocracy, while also fighting to save his friend's niece from being forced into marriage. Adventure, starring Patrick Bergin and Uma Thurman.

A leaky boat leaves the precocious youngsters stranded on a jungle island, but their luck changes when explorers the Wild Thornberrys come to their rescue. However, Thornberry dad Nigel loses his memory, so it falls to his daughter Eliza to save the day. Children's animated adventure, with the voices of Nancy Cartwright, Bruce Willis, Lacey Chabert, Elizabeth Daily and Tim Curry.

An expedition to find King Solomon's diamond mines in the jungles of the Congo disappears without a trace. Action-adventure based on Michael Crichton's novel, with Dylan Walsh, Laura Linney, Tim Curry and Grant Heslov.

Daffy Duck tires of playing second fiddle to Bugs Bunny, so sets off to seek his fortune. He ends up helping a would-be stuntman rescue his screen idol father, in reality, a secret agent, who has been kidnapped by the deranged chairman of the Acme Corporation. Live-action and animated comedy, with Brendan Fraser, Steve Martin, Timothy Dalton and Jenna Elfman.

A married couple from Chicago decide to steer clear of the usual festive celebrations and keep their cash for a holiday in the sun, prompting a busybody neighbour to call on the local community to pull out all the stops to make them change their minds. A festive comedy based on a novel by John Grisham, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Tim Allen, Dan Aykroyd and M Emmet Walsh.

A department store executive returns from a trip to Thailand in possession of a mysterious artefact that causes him to change places with his 11-year-old son. While the horrified father struggles to cope with a world of teachers and school bullies, the youngster is revelling in the perks of being a grown-up. Fantasy comedy, starring Judge Reinhold, Fred Savage, Swoosie Kurtz and Corinne Bohrer.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) 5STAR 1:50pm-5:20pm

An unassuming hobbit is plunged into a battle against the forces of darkness when his uncle bequeaths him a magical ring of immense power. He joins a fellowship of heroes to embark on a perilous quest to destroy the ring before it falls into the hands of its creator - a dark lord who needs it to regain his power and conquer the world.
