GREAT SCOTT…. Back to the Future turns 28!! Is it the most perfect retro movie?

With so many dates involved with the three Back to the Future films it’s hard to work out which anniversary you should be wearing your Back to the Future T-Shirts for. Trust me, today is one of the days you should be wearing your flux capacitor with pride but that’s not because it’s the anniversary of the day that Doc Brown asks Marty McFly to meet him at 1:15 A.M. at the Twin Pines Mall it’s not even the anniversary of the day Doc, Marty, Jennifer and Einstein travelled to Oct. 21, 2015… 28 years ago today saw Doc Brown and Marty McFly unleashed on the public!

I may have only been 3 at the time, but with a massive love of all things automotive it wouldn’t have taken a rocket scientist to work out that this retro blockbuster was likely to become my favourite flick! Never have I craved some movie merchandise so much more than wanting my very own DeLorean since the very first time I saw this movie!

I would be willing to bet that this is the perfect retro movie for petrolheads around the world, but is this movie really perfect? Well, with so many continuity errors in it it would appear not…. But I think I love the movie even more for it’s funny little foibles. Here’s 10 of my favourite….

1 – When Doc and Marty are at the Twin Pines Mall and Doc is telling Marty about the car etc, he says “never mind that now, never mind that now…” and Marty has the camera facing the ground, yet later when Doc in 1955 is watching the video, you can see him saying that on the video. [18:50 & 50.14]

2 – Marty has a brainwave about how to generate the power needed to get back to 1985, and shows Doc the flyer he was given, which Jennifer had written “I love you” on the back of, with her number. Problem is that after Doc grabs the flyer, we can see the back of it, and it’s totally blank. [10:56 & 52.11]

3 – The electric guitar Marty plays at the “Enchantment Under the Sea Dance” is a Gibson ES335, 345 or 355. Although he’s supposedly playing it in 1955, this guitar model was not made until 1958! [1:22:00]

4 – In the Cafe of 1955 Marty goes into the phone booth to look up docs name in the phone book, when he finds it the name is on the left hand page yet when he tears it out of the book he tears out the right hand page. One could say he turned the page to tear it right-handed, however when he is asking the waiter if he knew where the address was, he is reading the address on the same side he tore out – check the tears on the edge. [36:14]

5 – When Marty is standing over his father’s bed in 1955 persuading him to date Lorraine, there is a hair-dryer in Marty’s belt that seems to disappear between different frames (note the hair dryer’s cord leading to Marty’s right hand, as he holds it behind his back). Really obvious. [This scene was originally longer, including a part where Marty removed the hair dryer from his belt. Still a mistake, but there’s the explanation.] [59:50]

6 – When Marty is being chased by the Libyans, a few times it cuts away to show the instrumentation in the car. The first time the odometer reads 33064.2 and the trip counter says 88.8; the second time it’s goes back a little to 33061.8 and 86.4. A few seconds later we see it as he turns the corner, and it goes down again from 33,061.8 to 32,994.4, the trip counter has gone from 86.4 to 19. [29:00]

7 – When Marty is writing the letter to Doc before he goes into the future, the word “disaster” is the only word in the last line. Yet when Doc shows Marty the letter when it has been all taped up, “terrible disaster” is the last line. Also, the handwritring in each letter is different (i.e. Marty’s signature). They are two different letters. [01:13:00 & 01:41:00]

8 – When Biff chases after Marty on the borrowed ‘skateboard’, Marty is wearing a dark grey belt and a red/blue print shirt under his red/beige jacket. However, when Marty is hanging on to the front of Biff’s car as they turn a corner (and in another shot), Marty (stunt double) is wearing a light brown belt and solid tan shirt. [01:03:00]

9 – In the same scene, when Biff and his goon friends are in Biff’s car, as they chase Marty, the car’s rearview mirror repeatedly disappears and reappears. [01:03:00]

10 – Beginning of film. Twin Pines Mall. When Marty escapes the Libyans at the Twin Pines Mall, hits 88mph and ends up in Old Man Peabody’s barn, note how the car drives in through a large opening in the barn before crashing, however, the cut to the inside of the barn shows no form of entry other than the closed doors the family are entering. In addition the inside of the barn is very small compared to the outside view. [30:18]

Well, thats pretty conclusive that even my favourite movie isn’t perfect, but for all you Back to the Future fans we do have the perfect retro tshirt to show your love!!

10 things you [hopefully] didn’t know about Forrest Gump…

“Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Well you do when you shop at TruffleShuffle… You can guarantee that you will find some great movie t-shirts amongst pages and pages of the best retro gear on the web.

If [like me] you’re a fan of the slightly slow-witted southern boy and his extraodinary life story then we have some great Forrest Gump T-Shirts that you will definitely love. As with other famous block-busters there is lots of great facts and trivia surrounding the making of this epic romantic comedy-drama classic, so I thought I’d share 10 of my favourite facts about the making of the story surrounding the Bubba Gump shrimp entrepreneur.

1 – John Travolta, Chevy Chase, and Bill Murray all turned down the role of Forrest Gump.

2 – Sally Field, who played the mother of Forrest, is only 10 years older than Tom Hanks. Sally Field had previously co-starred with Tom Hanks, in the film “Punchline” 1988. In this film the character of Hanks makes proposal to heroine of Sally.

3 – With the first scene of each age transition one thing remains the same, Forrest always wears a blue plaid shirt.

4 – Apparently, the line Forrest says when his microphone is turned off at the Vietnam rally is: “Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don’t go home at all. That’s a bad thing. That’s all I have to say about that.”

5 – There was no ball in the Ping-Pong matches scenes; it was entirely CGI.

6 – Gary Sinise’s lower legs were wrapped in a special blue fabric that allowed them to be digitally removed later.

7 – Tom Hanks’ younger brother Jim Hanks doubled for him in many of his numerous running sequences.

8 – The traffic flow around squares in Savannah is normally counterclockwise. The flow was reversed for the movie in order to have the bus doors open into the square.

9 – This was Haley Joel Osment’s first film role.

10 – Forrest has his eyes closed in every photo you see of him in the movie.

So there you have it, 10 facts you hopefully didn’t know another one of my favourite retro films. Thankfully we have some great retro tshirts to show your appreciation too!!

10 Things You [Probably] Didn’t Know About Top Gun!

As soon as you here the opening chords of Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone,” you are transported back to a time when the coolest men in the universe were flying F-14 Tomcats for the Navy and had silly names like Maverick, Goose and Ice Man. “Top Gun” made Tom Cruise a household name and gave Meg Ryan one of her first movie gigs. But even though it’s one of the most frequently quoted guy movies, how well do you really know it? Here are some facts about “Top Gun” that might surprise you.

10 – The bar in which a boozy rendition of “Great Balls of Fire” was performed is real, and still exists. It’s called Kansas City BBQ, and it’s in San Diego, California. Although a 2008 fire destroyed a lot of its memorabilia, the piano is still there and they still sell Top Gun t-shirts.

9 – Top Gun was inspired by a 1983 article in California magazine called “Top Guns,” which was about young fighter pilots training at a Naval Air Station in San Diego. Unfortunately the school itself does not award a “Top Gun Trophy,” nor is there a points system. Those elements were invented for the film.

8 – The bad guys’ MiG-28s that battle the Navy’s F-14 squadron at the end of the film don’t exist, and never have. They were made up for the film, and were actually American Northrop F-5s painted black, chosen because they looked “villainous”.

7 – The band Toto was also originally asked to record the film’s now famous ’Danger Zone’ track, but the deal fell through due to legal disputes. Thus, Kenny Loggins recorded the song, and music history was made.

6 – Ever wondered why Kelly McGillis is so incognito in the lift scene or the subsequent love scene is shot through an obscuring blue tint? Well, during test screenings the audience complained about a lack of love scene between the two characters so the movie was sexed up, and those scenes were added six months after the film wrapped. By then, McGillis had dyed her hair for another role.

5 – “Cougar”, the fighter pilot who loses his edge in the opening scene and gives way for Maverick and Goose to attend the Top Gun academy, was played by actor John Stockwell, writer of the Mark Walhberg film “Rock Star” and Surf classic “Blue Crush”.

4 – As for call signs, did you know that the squat, bald officer (James Tolkan) who wants to ’bust Maverick and Gooses butts’ had one? It’s never mentioned in the movie, but in the script and credits (and his name plate pictured here) it is revealed as “Stinger”.

3 – Many viewers of “Top Gun” assume the MiG fighters are Russian. In fact, their country of origin is never actually identified because the studio didn’t want to anger any possible overseas audiences. In the original script, however, they are revealed to be North Korean.

2 – The introduction of Charlie (Kelly McGillis) famously begins with a close-up of her high heels as she addresses the assembled pilots. Later in that same scene, though, you can clearly see she’s wearing flats so the 5’10″ McGillis wouldn’t dwarf 5’7″ Cruise.

1 – Despite being very cooperative during production, the U.S. Navy told director Tony Scott that he could only fire the F-14’s missiles twice. Scott filmed them both, then reused the same two shots over and over throughout the movie.
