Amazing Thunderbirds Behind the Scenes Piccys!

5….4….3….2….1….Thunderbirds are GO!

We can still remember it now, the opening titles, the excitement of getting to see what the heroes of Tracey Island would be up to next and what catastrophe or evil villain they had to deal with, all taken in their bouncy, puppety stride.

For as long as we can remember, we’ve been the biggest fans of Thunderbirds along with a whole line of kids from its humble beginnings back on September 30th, 1965 (nearly 49 years ago!).

It had everything, the characters, the gadgets, the cars, the planes and of course….its own Island! Not only that, but at every moment you found yourself trying to spot the strings (which wasn’t tricky) and also when they had used someone’s hand….probably the tea boy’s, but all the while trying to believe it was all real. Simply magical!

Now, hopefully some of these won’t act as a spoiler and perhaps young fans eyes should look away, but we’ve been busy digging out some of our favourite pictures of the creative geniuses putting together this iconic show for you all to see. 12 Things You Didn't Know about Sesame Street

My blog post today is bought to you by the letter L. L is for love and down here at TruffleShuffle we love Sesame Street almost as much as we love t-shirts!

Incase rocking your latest Sesame Street related vintage t-shirt wasn’t enough to show your appreciation for the Street, we thought we’d arm you with 12 killer facts you probably didn’t know to impress your mates with down the pub….

1 – The show was almost called 123 Avenue B, but it was changed due to the fact that it was a real New York City address.

2 – The Count’s birthday is October 9, 1,830,653 B.C.

3 – Ernie wears horizontal stripes on his sweater to make him appear more relaxed; while Bert wears vertical stripes on his sweater to make him appear more uptight.

4 – Oscar the Grouch was originally orange. He changed to his trademark green color in the second season.

5 – In 1990, after Jim Henson‚Äôs untimely death, Kermit the Frog disappeared from the show. He reappeared in new segments in 1998. Jim never considered Kermit a regular, he always referred to him as ‚ÄúSesame Street‚Äôs #1 guest star.‚ÄĚ

6 – Big Bird is 8’2″ tall.

7 – Cookie Monster a.k.a “The Wheel Stealer”, predates the show by 3 years. Jim Henson originally designed an early version of the character [with teeth!] in 1966, to appear in an ad for General Mills Canada‚Äôs Wheels, Crowns and Flutes snacks. The pilot ad never aired.

8 – “America’s favorite game show host” Guy Smiley‚Äôs real name is Bernie Liederkrantz. Guy was Jim Henson‚Äôs least favorite character to perform.

9 – Ernie’s signature song “Rubber Duckie” was a tribute to his very own beloved Rubber Duckie. The song first aired during episode 78 going on to eventually reach number 16 on Billboard’s “Hot 100 Singles” chart in 1970.

10 – The character of Oscar the Grouch was inspired by two people. His attitude comes from a nasty waiter that served Jim Henson and former director Jon Stone at a restaurant called Oscar’s Tavern in Manhattan. The voice was inspired by a cab-driver that used to drive Caroll Spinney to the set every day during the first season.

11 – In 1979, C-3PO and R2-D2 visited Sesame Street.

12 – It is believed that Snuffuluffagus is Big Bird’s imaginary friend. Big bird is the ONLY character who sees him. Originally the adults on the show refused to believe he existed, but this was changed in 1985 when producers felt that this may would discourage children from sharing important things with their parents.

Talk Ti-mmy! We catch up with the legendary Timmy Mallett…

School holidays were supposed to be about lie-ins and staying in bed until lunchtime, but this dream was shattered in 1985 when the alarm clock had to be set for 8:45am in order to hit the sofa for the 8:50am start of Wacaday.

Oringinally co-presenting the Saturday morning show Wide Awake Club, Wacaday gave Timmy Mallett the chance to shine in the zaniest way possible, and within days of the first show being aired (which coincidentally was the same week Timmy turned 30), us 80s kids were hooked on this utterly brilliant show!

25 years after those good ole Wac-a-days, Timmy remains a legendary character. His thirty year career started out as a radio presenter (in charge of a team including Chris Evans and Brian Cox) before presenting various TV shows, singing a number one hit single, appearing on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!, performing in a couple of pantos and more recently enjoying the limelight of being a very successful artist.

We have the pleasure of working with Timmy on our range of Mallett’s Mallet T-Shirts and thought you TruffleShufflers might want to know the same things we’ve wanted to know all these years…

TS: So Timmy, we love your fabulously daring sense of fashion in particular those crazy glasses you wear! Which are your all-time favourites?

TM: I have squillions of pairs of spex. Lots were made specially for my TV shows and hit records! The¬†Eiffel¬†Tower, the mad skier, the Olympic rings, The Wacaday spex and the big Mallett’s Mallet pair.¬† I have the pink cadillac spex and the Itsy Bitsy spex with palm trees! Wild, and ¬†I love ’em all. I have a pair in my studio at the moment that I spent the morning painting. I’ve attached toys and buttons to them and they will be on my face at my next show!

TS: There were a lot of crazy moments on Wacaday! What is your funniest memory of the show?

TM: I loved it when we had the occasional guest star on the show¬†– Jason and Kylie playing Mallett’s Mallet was fun. It was always great to go on travels around the World with the Mallet and see the way kids everywhere enjoyed the fun of the show.

I loved the way Magic the cockatiel would fly around the studio and land on the the camera with his tail in shot. The cameramen would get nervous in case he left a little present on their heads!

TS: We love your cute companion, Pinky Punky, but whatever became of him? Are you still in touch? What is he doing now? Has he found love?

TM: Pinky Punky – the little Mallet who popped up to shout out the address – “Wacaday….blah blah Blah, London NW1 8TQ!!!!!!” and “Mr Mallett, I’m so excited can¬†I got to the toilet!” ¬†He was our little audience, and often the props guy would¬†use a water pistol to wee all over the place!¬† Pinky Punky has a girl friend – Hanky Panky¬†and the good news is you can get your very own Pinky Punky Mallet now and keep him to remind you of the happiest days of your life!¬† You’re never too old to be a kid again!

TS: Who’s your most famous fan?

TM: Mrs Thatcher¬† wanted to be hit on the head by the Mallet, Tony Blair’s family came to panto so they could look at each other and go BLAAAH; Princess Diana loved watching Wacaday with¬†Princes William and Harry; Gary Barlow invited me to sing Itsy Bitsy at his wedding anniversary – Dawn was one of my itsy bitsy girls; and Simon Cowell used to¬†plug records to our show.¬† Shall I carry on?

TS: No, Timmy, that’s enough to put a smile on our faces for days… and we now know what Prince Harry was doing in that infamous picture on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, all together now… BLEEEEEUUUUGHHHHHH!
