10 Things You [Probably] Didn’t Know About…Your Top Christmas Films

Possibly something that’s almost just as good as Christmas itself…it is of course Christmas movies! Yep they give us that warm feeling that everything’s a little different at this special time of year, the birds sing a little louder, people smile just that little bit wider and kids everywhere go just that extra bit more huper! Oh the joy!

To help us celebrate these classic flicks and to let us enjoy them just that little bit more, check out some pretty cool facts we’ve found out about some of the nation’s top Christmas films in our ‘10 Things You [Probably] Didn’t Know About Your Top Christmas Films.’ Enjoy!
1) Miracle on 34th Street: The scenes of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade are actually taken from the 1946 parade. The movie is credited with bringing the traditional parade to the national spotlight, and Macy’s employees were given half a day off so they could see the first showing of the movie.

2) Home Alone: In the scene where chief bad guy played by Joe Pesci bites Kevin’s finger, he actually bit harder than expected and left Macaulay with a scar he has to this day.

3) Die Hard: Head honcho Gruber and his terrorist minions are portrayed to be speaking German throughout the film, in fact, it’s so dodgy that it’s not really any language and they were actually described as hailing from “Europe” in the German release of the film. Awkward!

4) National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation: A minor earthquake occurred at the time when they were filming the scene where Uncle Louis and Aunt Bethany arrive at the Griswold house. If you watch closely, you can see the camera shake slightly as she walks through the front door.

5) Elf: The scene in the department store when the fake Santa chases Buddy around the store, knocking over all his hard work, had to be done in one take — can you imagine rebuilding all that!

6) It’s a Wonderful Life: The set of Bedford Falls took over two months to build on the RKO lot and became one of the longest sets ever created for an American movie. It covered over four acres and included over 70 buildings. Main Street alone was three blocks long and measured well over 300 yards.

7) A Christmas Story: A Christmas Story was a very small budget film which used tracking shots instead of Steadicam and had no special effects. The director commented that the sparks on a stunt man’s butt were real and that x-ing out the bad guys’ eyes was “a real trial.”

8 ) Scrooged: During the scene where Carol Kane grabs Bill Murray’s lip, she really latched on and accidentally tore it so badly that they had to stop filming for a few days so Bill could heal and his injuries wouldn’t be so obvious on film.

9) Love Actually: Love Actually was the soooo popular when it first hit the shelves, it quickly became the most rented DVD in the UK in 2004.

10) The Polar Express: When the conductor says “11344 Edbrooke” near the beginning of the film, he’s referring to director Robert Zemeckis’ actual childhood home in Chicago.

So there they are folks! We hope this has got you even just a little bit more in the festive spirit and are ready to enjoy all the fun and food that Christmas brings.

The Jumpers of Christmas Past…

The world has literally gone crazy for kitsch, Cheesy Christmas Jumpers (or ugly jumpers as some people like to call them).

We have been hooked ever since Colin Firth fashioned a rather fetching Reindeer Jumper in Bridget Jones Diary, but it doesn’t end or even begin there. The cult of the Christmas Jumper has reigned for quite some time now. Ever since grannies decided to take up knitting needles, keeping themselves busy with increasingly intricate, vivid, sparkly and even 3D, festive woolen fantasies, people have been either proudly flaunting this festive fashion or begrudgingly obliged to wear it at family functions.

If it seems all too familiar, you will probably recognise the deliberate fashion faux-pas from some of your favourite movies and TV shows. Remember these?

Brian - Family Guy

The Grinch - How The Grinch Stole Christmas

If you haven’t jumped on the festive jumper sleigh-wagon yet, what’s the hold up? As soon as you see our winter wonderland of offerings from Cheesy Christmas Jumpers and Crazy Granny Clothing (unisex – for both men and ladies) and pop them in the cart of retro awesomeness, the gift of Christmas Merriment will be yours forever!

We know YULE love it, but be quick as these are literally sledging it out of the warehouse as fast as Santa Claus can eat a mince pie…
