Retro 80s ZX Spectrum Gets a Reboot This April!

Great news retro gamer fans! The iconic Spectrum consoles which first came into our lives way back in 1982 is set to make a comeback in spectacular fashion!
.
For those of us not in the know or simply perhaps too young to be clued up (some of us included!), The Spectrum was among the first mainstream home computers in the UK and came in a few different models and specs through the following years including a 16kb RAM and one with 48kb RAM. Mad compared to the number of gigabytes of RAM we have now! Probably explains why the thing took so long to load 🙂

As exciting as all that was back in the day, it’s probably almost as exciting as the news we’ve just received that this will be making a comeback and will be better than ever!

Produced by SMS Electronics in Nottinghamshire, the project has been in full swing with fans all over the world donating over £130,000 through a crowdfunding campaign to get things off the ground and to become a reality.

The latest iteration of the console will look the same as the original, and comes pre-loaded with more than 1,000 classic games including…
Jetpac

Manic Miner

Jet Set Willy
Ant Attack
Elite
R-Type
Chuckie Egg
Plenty of awesome games to be played! So how much will this cost you wonder? These are expected to sell for less than £100 when it goes on sale later in April. You’d better start clearing a space under you telly then….

Don’t forget to check out our huuuuge range of retro gaming T-Shirts available at TruffleShuffle.co.uk! The perfect place to celebrate your inner (or not so much inner) geek!

30 seconds of pure WANT – Classic 80s Toys Ads.

Remember the days before iPads and Playstations where you had to use your imagination a little or play the game with an actual person in the same room?? No nor me, but apparently they are now retro games and toys!! Whether it was the family favourite board game or your favourite sylvanian family it now seems far more friendly and sociable than shouting at a french 15 year old whose just crushed your kill ratio on Call of Duty. Get ready to hop back to the 1980s, because we’re revisiting some of the best 80s toy commercials. They may have only lasted an average of 30 seconds (Hard to believe, right?) and been packed with loads of imagery, a jingle and the usual fast-talking small print but they live on for years conjuring great memories of enthusiastically writing Christmas lists mid September! So get ready for a trip down memory lane as I show you my favourite toy commercials of the 1980s! So sit back, relax and get ready to remember what playtime was like before technology took over.

Teddy Ruxpin the storytelling bear was one of the most popular 1980s toys. Today, a toy like this would be able to recognize what kids said to him and respond and be completely programmed on some sort of chip. Back in the day, Teddy Ruxpin worked with a cassette tape but we all still thought he was the coolest thing in the world. Can you imagine a toy running on a cassette tape today?

In the 80s, there wasn’t a single girl that didn’t have at least one My Little Pony in her toy collection. You could do all sorts of fun stuff with a My Little Pony like comb and brush her hair, tie a ribbon on her tail and look at her standing on her immobile legs. It’s hard to imagine a toy like this keeping kids’ interest today, but my sister and my cousin used to spend hours with their My Little Ponies.

The 80s also had some cool outdoor toys. The Pogo Bal was definitely one the coolest. I was definitley a Pogo Ball master. It even turned parents in to big kids (Oh, just mine then?). Simplicity like this probably wouldn’t entertain kids these days for too long but I remember having competition with my sister for hours!!

A boy gets to a certain age and all he cares about is winding up and grossing out his parents and siblings. To help please welcome the Madball – the totally sick, gross, freaky, ugly and funny ball. Gross for one! Gross for all! At least until you dog decides to spend the afternoon ‘playing’ with it….

Being car-mad from a very young age this minature marvels were of course my favourite toy!! With micro ads the MicroMachine guy was REALLY good at fitting as much information as possible into a 15-second slot. I can’t understand all of what he’s saying, but he sounds so excited that I wanted to buy all the MicroMachines, NOW!

What was your favorite childhood toy? Let us know in the comments!
