The Weekly Retro Movie Rundown!

Sweet Potato and cheese! It’s the weekend so soon? Yeeesh!

Like a true masterchef in their domain, this weekend we’ll be cutting, slicing, dicing and mixing like a culinary ninja as we working hard to create the perfect balance of flavours, textures and of course making our creation as perfectly presented as possible! Plating up a retro movie masterpiece on our hot plate, we’ll give everything just the right amount of action garnish, a shaking of comedy seasoning and of course, a healthy dose of retro classic spice!

SATURDAY 7th February

Superman
(1978) 5USA 4:00pm-6:50pm (2 hours 50 minutes)
A fledgling superhero crash-lands on Earth after evacuation from his home planet and is taken in by an elderly couple who raise him as their own. But with adolescence comes a greater understanding of his superhuman powers, leading to his rebirth as a crusader for justice and defender of the American way of life. Comic-strip adventure, with Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder and Marlon Brando.

Teenager Sam Witwicky is treated to his first car by his dad, but it turns out to be an alien scout with a life of its own. Before long, the vehicle embroils Sam in a long-running intergalactic war between two factions of giant shape-changing robots, which have come to Earth to find a mystical cube that grants infinite power to its possessor. Michael Bay’s sci-fi action adventure, inspired by the toy franchise, with Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Jon Voight and John Turturro.

Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment (1985) ITV4 7:10pm-9:00pm (1 hour 50 minutes)
America’s most inept cops graduate and are let loose on the streets – under the command of an unscrupulous lieutenant whose promotion depends on their failure. Fortunately for him, their unique brand of policing actually leads to an increase in the crime rate. Comedy sequel, starring Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith, David Graf and Michael Winslow.

Fun Fact: Despite the fact that no such character exists in the movie, a blonde policewoman appears on the official poster. This was an inside joke made by the producers, as they had also requested that a “sexy girl” be included on the first film’s poster.

Air Force One (1997) Watch 9:00pm-11:25pm (2 hours 25 minutes)
The American president is forced to take drastic measures to save his family when their plane is hijacked by Russian terrorists demanding the release of a jailed radical general. Meanwhile, the vice president tries to manage the crisis from Washington and has to decide whether to shoot the aircraft down. Action thriller, starring Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman, Glenn Close, Dean Stockwell and William H Macy.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) E4 9:00pm-11:40pm (2 hours 40 minutes)
A reprogrammed killing machine is sent back in time to the 20th century to protect John Connor, a teenage boy whose destiny is to save the human race. After breaking John’s mother out of a mental institution, the pair set out to avert a future nuclear war – pursued by an advanced prototype terminator with shape-changing powers. Sci-fi action adventure sequel, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong and Robert Patrick.

The Punisher (1989) 5USA 10:00pm-11:55pm (1 hour 55 minutes)
A former policeman takes the law into his own hands to avenge the murder of his family. However, he ends up fighting to save the children of the gangster he has sworn to bring down when they are kidnapped by a rival syndicate. Vigilante thriller, starring Dolph Lundgren, Louis Gossett Jr and Jeroen Krabbe.

Hard Target (1993) ITV London 10:35pm-12:20am (1 hour 45 minutes)
A woman searching for her missing father hires an out-of-work merchant sailor to guide her through the streets of New Orleans, where his martial arts skills are greatly tested in a series of encounters with sadistic hunters of human prey. John Woo’s action thriller, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Yancy Butler, Lance Henriksen and Wilford Brimley.

Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life (1983) ITV4 11:30pm-1:40am (2 hours 10 minutes)
A series of sketches examining mankind’s secrets and taboos through the trials of life from conception to death. Surreal comedy, starring the Python team of Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. Featuring introductory short film The Crimson Permanent Assurance.

It Could Happen to You
(1994) Channel 5 1:20pm-3:15pm (1 hour 55 minutes)
A cop is unable to tip a waitress, but instead promises to split the proceeds with her if he wins the lottery. However, his elation when he actually bags the jackpot quickly fades when his furious wife makes it plain she does not want him to honour the pledge. Romantic comedy, starring Nicolas Cage, Bridget Fonda, Rosie Perez and Isaac Hayes.

Teen Wolf (1985) Syfy 4:00pm-6:00pm (2 hours)
A teenage misfit is initially dismayed to learn he is a werewolf as a result of a hereditary curse. He finds there are advantages as he becomes a local celebrity, while his enhanced agility makes him the star player of his school’s basketball team – but fame quickly goes to his head. Comedy, starring Michael J Fox, James Hampton and Susan Ursitti.

Moonraker (1979) ITV London 4:15pm-6:35pm (2 hours 20 minutes)
James Bond’s investigations into the mysterious disappearance of a space shuttle lead him to a sinister industrialist, who is plotting to wipe out most of the human race. The secret agent also faces a rematch with his old enemy, metal-toothed hitman Jaws. Spy adventure, starring Roger Moore, Michael Lonsdale, Richard Kiel and Lois Chiles.

Fun Fact: The villain Jaws is the only time a sidekick villain or henchman has ever returned in a James Bond movie. The character of Jaws first appeared in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977).

Die Hard (1988) Sky Movies Crime & Thriller HD 5:40pm-8:00pm (2 hours 20 minutes)
New York cop John McClane visits Los Angeles to see his family over the Christmas holiday. Stopping off at his wife’s place of work, he realises armed men have taken over the building and are holding the corporation’s staff to ransom – and only he has the ability to fight back. Action thriller, starring Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman and Bonnie Bedelia.

Mission: Impossible (1996) E4 8:00pm-10:10pm (2 hours 10 minutes)
Secret agents suspect there is a traitor in their organisation when their latest assignment ends in disaster. The sole survivor is accused of being the mole, forcing him to go on the run to clear his name. However, in the process, he discovers a former Russian spy is selling information about the world’s leading undercover operatives. Action thriller based on the 1960s TV series, starring Tom Cruise, Jon Voight and Ving Rhames.

Patriot Games (1992) Channel 4 HD 11:05pm-1:10am (2 hours 5 minutes)
Former CIA agent Jack Ryan foils an assassination attempt by an IRA splinter group, killing one of the terrorists in the process. However, he becomes caught in a lethal game of cat-and-mouse with the dead man’s revenge-seeking brother. Thriller based on Tom Clancy’s novel, starring Harrison Ford, Sean Bean, Samuel L Jackson, Richard Harris and James Earl Jones, reprising his role from earlier Clancy adaptation The Hunt for Red October.

The Breakfast Club (1985) ITV3 12:10am-2:05am (1 hour 55 minutes)
Five teenagers who occupy different areas of their school’s social structure are thrown together for a Saturday morning detention. During the day, they analyse their behaviour and find unexpected common ground. Drama, directed by John Hughes and starring Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy and Paul Gleason.

Whatever you’re up to this weekend, make sure you always turn the light off after you and remember, it’s better to finish something well than just finish it.

The Weekly Retro Movie Rundown!

Herman’s Hermits! It must be the weekend!

So under a rung of gently flickering fluorescent lights, inside a heaving family packed restaurant, at the back of a cue for an all you can eat buffet. Let us be your medically obese, adolescent male, adorned in button up stripy shirt and stretchy sweatpants as we prepare to load our plate with a heap of steaming retro movie magic. We’ll pile on gallons of cinematic awesomeness before we wedge ourselves ever so uncomfortably into our seat and devour the celluloid wonder….Burp!!

SATURDAY 28th JUNE

The ‘Burbs (1989) ITV4 12:25pm-2:25pm (2 hours)
The arrival of secretive neighbours sparks an unhealthy curiosity in a group of friends, leading them to go to bizarre lengths to discover  the truth about the newcomers. However, their investigations take an even weirder twist when they begin to suspect their unseen fellow suburbanites are part of a cannibalistic cult. Joe Dante’s black comedy, starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, Corey Feldman and  Henry Gibson.

Fun Fact: Early in the movie, when Cory Danziger is eating breakfast, a box of Gremlins cereal can be seen on the kitchen counter in the background. Director Joe Dante also directed Gremlins (1984) and Corey Feldman was in Gremlins (1984).

Independence Day (1996) Film4 1:00pm-3:45pm (2 hours 45 minutes)
A fleet of huge flying saucers launches a devastating and unprovoked attack on Earth. As survivors try to flee the seemingly unstoppable alien invaders, the courageous US president, an ace pilot and a computer genius come up with a plan to take the fight to the enemy and  save the human race. Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi adventure, starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Randy Quaid,  Robert Loggia and Harry Connick Jr.

Sci-fi adventure, starring Kurt Russell, James Spader and Jaye Davidson.

Spooky couple Gomez and Morticia hire a nanny to look after their new baby son – and stop him suffering an early death at the hands of his  jealous elder siblings. Romance soon blossoms between the new childminder and Uncle Fester, but he does not realise she is planning to kill him once she has got hold of the family fortune. Comedy sequel, starring Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci and Joan Cusack.

Mars Attacks! (1996) ITV4 9:00pm-11:10pm (2 hours 10 minutes)
The inhabitants of Earth leap into action to repel an impending invasion by a seemingly invincible Martian army, which possesses superior  weaponry, a thirst for destruction and a wicked sense of humour. Tim Burton’s sci-fi comedy, starring Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Pierce Brosnan, Annette Bening, Natalie Portman, Danny DeVito and Tom Jones.

And Now for Something Completely Different (1971) BBC1 London 12:05am-1:30am (1 hour 25 minutes)
The Monty Python members appear in their first movie, comprising re-enacted sketches from the first two series of the surreal comedy show. Highlights include the dead parrot sketch, the Lumberjack Song and the Upper-class Twit of the Year Race. Starring the usual team of John Cleese, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, with regular female sidekick Carol Cleveland.
