30 seconds of pure WANT – Classic 80s Toys Ads.

Remember the days before iPads and Playstations where you had to use your imagination a little or play the game with an actual person in the same room?? No nor me, but apparently they are now retro games and toys!! Whether it was the family favourite board game or your favourite sylvanian family it now seems far more friendly and sociable than shouting at a french 15 year old whose just crushed your kill ratio on Call of Duty. Get ready to hop back to the 1980s, because we’re revisiting some of the best 80s toy commercials. They may have only lasted an average of 30 seconds (Hard to believe, right?) and been packed with loads of imagery, a jingle and the usual fast-talking small print but they live on for years conjuring great memories of enthusiastically writing Christmas lists mid September! So get ready for a trip down memory lane as I show you my favourite toy commercials of the 1980s! So sit back, relax and get ready to remember what playtime was like before technology took over.

Teddy Ruxpin the storytelling bear was one of the most popular 1980s toys. Today, a toy like this would be able to recognize what kids said to him and respond and be completely programmed on some sort of chip. Back in the day, Teddy Ruxpin worked with a cassette tape but we all still thought he was the coolest thing in the world. Can you imagine a toy running on a cassette tape today?

In the 80s, there wasn’t a single girl that didn’t have at least one My Little Pony in her toy collection. You could do all sorts of fun stuff with a My Little Pony like comb and brush her hair, tie a ribbon on her tail and look at her standing on her immobile legs. It’s hard to imagine a toy like this keeping kids’ interest today, but my sister and my cousin used to spend hours with their My Little Ponies.

The 80s also had some cool outdoor toys. The Pogo Bal was definitely one the coolest. I was definitley a Pogo Ball master. It even turned parents in to big kids (Oh, just mine then?). Simplicity like this probably wouldn’t entertain kids these days for too long but I remember having competition with my sister for hours!!

A boy gets to a certain age and all he cares about is winding up and grossing out his parents and siblings. To help please welcome the Madball – the totally sick, gross, freaky, ugly and funny ball. Gross for one! Gross for all! At least until you dog decides to spend the afternoon ‘playing’ with it….

Being car-mad from a very young age this minature marvels were of course my favourite toy!! With micro ads the MicroMachine guy was REALLY good at fitting as much information as possible into a 15-second slot. I can’t understand all of what he’s saying, but he sounds so excited that I wanted to buy all the MicroMachines, NOW!

What was your favorite childhood toy? Let us know in the comments!

Make This Christmas a Retro Christmas!

Are you looking to make your Christmas a little more retro? Of course you are! Below I have put together some ideas on how you can have an awesome retro Christmas.

Movies

Everyone loves a movie at Christmas, why not sit back and enjoy some classic retro movie films with your family and friends. Our recommendations are:

  • National Lampoons Xmas Vacation It’s Christmas time and the Griswolds are preparing for a family seasonal celebration, but things never run smoothly for Clark, his wife Ellen and their two kids. Clark’s continual bad luck is worsened by his obnoxious family guests, but he manages to keep going knowing that his Christmas bonus is due soon. [IMDB]
  • Home AloneHome AloneIt is Christmas time and the McAllister family is preparing for a vacation in Paris, France. But the youngest in the family named Kevin got into a scuffle with his older brother Buzz and was sent to his room which is on the third floor of his house. Then, the next morning, while the rest of the family was in a rush to make it to the airport on time, they completely forgot about Kevin who now has the house all to himself. Being home alone was fun for Kevin, having a pizza all to himself, jumping on his parents’ bed, and making a mess. Then, Kevin discovers about two burglars, Harry and Marv, about to rob his house on Christmas Eve. Kevin acts quickly by wiring his own house with makeshift booby traps to stop the burglars and to bring them to justice. [IMDB]
  • A Charlie Brown ChristmasWhen Charlie Brown complains about the overwhelming materialism that he sees amongst everyone during the Christmas season, Lucy suggests that he become director of the school Christmas paegent. Charlie Brown accepts, but it proves to be a frustrating struggle. When an attempt to restore the proper spirit with a forlorn little fir Christmas tree fails, he needs Linus’ help to learn what the real meaning of Christmas is. [IMDB]
  • Miracle On 34th Street At the Macy’s Department Store Thanksgiving Day parade, the actor playing Santa is discovered to be drunk by a whiskered old man. Doris Walker, the no nonsense special events director, persuades the old man to take his place. The old man proves to be a sensation and is quickly recruited to be the store Santa at the main Macy’s outlet. While he is successful, Ms. Walker learns that he calls himself Kris Kringle and he claims to be the actual Santa Claus. Despite reassurances by Kringle’s doctor that he is harmless, Doris still has misgivings, especially when she has cynically trained herself, and especially her daughter, Susan, to reject all notions of belief and fantasy. And yet, people, especially Susan, begin to notice there is something special about Kris and his determination to advance the true spirit of Christmas amidst the rampant commercialism around him and succeeding in improbable ways… [IMDB]

Toys & Games

At Christmas many families like to get together and enjoy a few hours playing games. Below are some of our favorite retro games that we think you should get out of the cupboard this Xmas.

  • Monopoly – Over 1 billion people around the world have played monopoly at some point in their life. The aim of the game being to earn as much money as possible and bankrupt your opponents. Although games can drag on for hours it can be great fun for family members of all ages.
  • Buckaroo – A game for people with a steady hand! The aim of Buckaroo is to place a number of items onto a mules back without him jolting into the air throwing all the items off his back. The winner of the game is the last player standing.
  • Guess Who – A great game for kids and adults – Each player starts the game with a board that includes cartoon images of 24 people and their first names. Each player selecting a card of their choice from a separate pile of cards containing the same 24 images. The object of the game is to be the first to determine which card your opponent has selected. Players alternate asking various yes or no questions to eliminate candidates, such as “Does this person wear glasses?” Well-crafted questions allow players to eliminate one or more possible cards.
  • Scrabble – This one is for the more grown-up among you. Scrabble is a word game in which two to four players score points by forming words from individual lettered tiles on a gameboard marked with a 15-by-15 grid. The words are formed across and down in crossword fashion and must appear in a standard dictionary

What movies do you like to watch at Christmas? Do you like to play games at Xmas? If so, what is your game of choice?
