Celebrating in style with a little deep dive back into North Shore High School, check out some perhaps little-known facts about mean girls we've sniffed out.

1 . It's based on a non-fiction book called Queen Bees and Wannabes

Yup, 2002 self-help book by Rosalind Wiseman. Written for parents of teenage girls that shed light on the ways in which high school girls form cliques, and on handling patterns of aggressive behaviour. This inspired Tina Fey to create Mean Girls.

2. Everybody wanted to be Regina

Both Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried originally read for the part of the lead mean girl, Regina George.

3. Mean Girls was Amanda Seyfried's first movie.

Wild to think, huh. Amanda had starred in two TV shows 'As the World Turns (1999-2001) and 'Ally My Childen (2003) before hitting the big screen.

4. Damian wasn't singing to an audience.

Actor Daniel Franzese later revealed the auditorium was pretty empty despite how it all seems in the movie. We can't blame him one bit for that.

5. Although they both portray characters who are in high school and are in the same grade, Rachel McAdams is 8 years older than Lindsay Lohan.

6. Nice wig, Janis Regina.

Rachel McAdams reportedly didn’t want to bleach her hair for the role so was given a $10,000 wig. Sooo... "I hear her hair's insured for $10,000" was kinda right?

7. Although it's never mentioned anywhere in the film, the names of Cady's parents are Chip (her dad) and Betsy Herron (her mom).

8. Cady's childhood was based on Eliza in The Wild Thornberrys

Loving with her zoologist parents in Africa so they could study animals... sound familiar? The kicker, Lacey Chabert (Gretchen) voiced Eliza in The Wild Thornberrys!

9. The movie was nearly called 'Homeschooled'.

The original story for Cady was that she had previously been homeschooled until this was later swapped for The Wild Thornberrys style story we know now.

10. Glen Coco, as mentioned in Damian's line "You go, Glen Coco," is a real person. He's a childhood friend of Tina Fey's brother.

11. Tim Meadows broke his hand before shooting.

As a result, he had to wear a cast, so the idea that his character, Mr. Duvall, had carpal tunnel was written in later.

12. Although they play mother and daughter in the film, Amy Poehler is only seven years older than Rachel McAdams.

13. Damien's line '...And I want my pink shirt back!' was improvised by actor Daniel Franzese.

Off the cuff and one of the most iconic lines in the movie.

14. Queen Bee

In the book on which the movie is based, the popular girl in a school is given the title "Queen Bee.". The name "Regina," means "queen" in Latin, Italian, and Romanian.

15. Regina's dig to Cady, "So you agree? You think you're really pretty?" was inspired by an experience Tina Fey actually had as a teenager.

16. Steve Martin could have played Mr. Duvall.

A personal comedy hero of Tina Fey's, Steve was asked to play this iconic head teacher role but he was busy shooting Cheaper by the Dozen (2003).

17. This movie nearly earned an R rating for explicit, risque gags and jokes, which were subsequently cut.

Anyone else feel like we totally need an R-rated edit one day??

18. Although the movie takes place in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, it was filmed in Toronto, Canada.

19. "Fetch" (short for "fetching") was invented by Tina Fey.

Tina wanted something teenagers might use but don't as this might date the movie as it goes out of fashion.

20. Lindsay Lohan had more than 50 wardrobe changes.

It's called fashion... look it up. The wardrobe department created more than 59 outfits for Cady and 30 more for each of the other Plastics.

So much to know, huh! One thing is for sure, two decades later, this classic movie still holds a special place in our hearts.
